On February 12^th,   JJ Wilson, author of Speakout, Total English, the award winning novel Damnificados and writer-in-residence at Western New Mexico University, will be at the Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics  to present to an audience of students.   Even if you can’t make it in person, you’ll still be able to watch the whole event on a live stream.

 

JJ has taught in Egypt, Colombia, England, Italy, the United States and Lesotho, and has travelled to more than 60 countries.  His first novel, Damnificados, won the New Mexico-Arizona Book Award for Fiction, the Independent Publisher Book Award for Multicultural Fiction and was listed by The Oprah Magazine as one of the top ten books to read now.

Competition for journalism students

As part of JJ’s first ever visit to Ukraine, Pearson and Dinternal Education are organising a national competition open to any current journalism student at a Ukrainian university.  To take part, you’ll need to:

• either attend JJ’s event (registration will soon be opened) or watch on the Youtube . 
• Write a news article on what you see (maximum 250 words in English);
• Send your entries to Anna Brusko brusko.a@dinternal.com.ua with the subject JJ Wilson Competition

The closing date for entries is 5pm on  February 28^th 2018.

The winning entry will be published online by Pearson and will also receive a signed copy of Speakout with MyEnglishLab.

The entries will be judged by  qualified journalists from the UK, who’ll also provide general feedback on the work they receive. As your article will be published online by Pearson in Ukraine, you’ll need to communicate the who, what, where, when, why (and how) of the story.   Think about the audience you’ll be addressing – mainly English teachers – and what they do and don’t know about the event already.  You won’t need a headline but you will need to make sure your entry immediately grabs your readers’ attention and is both comprehensible and informative.  Everything should be written in English, of course.

 

Judges

Andy Hudson has written for the Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror, the South Shields Gazette, STV (Scottish Television) and the Swedish website Premier League Direkt as well as running the media team for a semi-professional football club.  Using his long experience of managing corporate communications, he now runs his own communications consultancy business.

Laurie Hanna is currently media manager at Amnesty International UK.  He has written for the Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Sunday People, The Sun and the Sunday Mirror and was news editor of the British national newspaper the New Day.  He has also provided original content for Channel 4 TV and Sky Sports, covering major international sporting events such as the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 London Olympics.  In 2015, he worked as content manager for the Baku European Games Operation Committee, where he had full editorial control of all web and social media content, videos, publications, promotional material and press releases.

Entry is open to any student currently enrolled on a journalism course at a Ukrainian university.

Only entries emailed to brusko.a@dinternal.com.ua with the appropriate subject heading will be considered.

All entrants should include the name of their university, course and the contact details of their course teacher. 

The winner will be notified by email within 7 days of the closing date.

There is no cash alternative to the prize.
